Melvin “Mel” Albert Hiatt

Melvin Albert Hiatt was born at home on January 12th, 1921, in the city of Portland, Oregon, and died at home April 19th, 2012, at the full old age of 91. He was preceded in death by his younger sister Joyce Solomon and his Grandson Ben Hiatt. He is survived by his other three siblings; Carol Six, JoAnne Stradley, and Ralph Hiatt. He is also survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Alice Hiatt, five sons, four daughters in law, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Bro. Mel’s father and mother were committed Christ followers. It was at his mother’s knee, at the age of five, that he asked Jesus Christ to forgive his sins. He grew up learning to love and follow God. World War II was transpiring as he graduated from High School and he enlisted in the Navy. Through a miraculous series of events, he was selected to attend college and graduated in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University. While at Purdue, he met a beautiful young lady at a nearby church, Ruth Alice Van Hook. A few months after coming back to the West Coast to his first job at Boeing, he asked Alice to marry him. She said yes, bravely got on a train, and they were married the same day she arrived.

They started a family in Puyallup, Washington, and had five sons; Dave, Steve, Paul, Ben, and Dan. Bro. Mel served God faithfully as a minister in the Apostolic Faith Church in Puyallup, while maintaining a full time engineering position at Boeing. At Boeing, he worked in various capacities on the 707, 727, 737, and 747 commercial jetliners. In 1969, Boeing transferred him to Cincinnati, Ohio to work on the SST program. In 1971, with the recession came the “Boeing Bust” and the end of his 22 year Boeing career.

Bro. Mel, Alice, Ben, and Dan moved back to the Seattle area and into a house in Kenmore. Bro. Mel studied and obtained his real estate license. By selling real estate and investing in rental houses, he secured a modest living and a retirement income.

Bro. Mel wholeheartedly gave his life in service as a faithful minster in the Apostolic Faith Church till his passing. He held many responsible positions over his 40 years of service in Seattle, including; Assistant Pastor, Preacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Youth Camp Director, Teacher, Song Leader, Choir Director, and Pianist. He led countless Union Gospel Mission and retirement homes meetings, even up to his last few weeks of life. Everyone knew Bro. Mel had a passion for Jesus Christ and he influenced many for the Kingdom of God.

Bro. Mel went to be with Jesus after a brief 6 week illness following a heart attack. We are thankful that today he is enjoying his reward in heaven. He will be missed, but we are thankful for the warm memories and his faithful Godly example and influence.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, 12:30 PM at the Apostolic Faith Church, 7420 9th Avenue Northeast Seattle, WA 98115.

Noreen Jewel ECKAUS

Noreen Eckaus was born in Tacoma, Washington on March 26, 1924.

Her childhood included her parents’ divorce, living in a convent, losing her half brother and half sister to their early deaths and being threatened with kidnapping in a ransom note! Despite such challenges, Noreen grew to be a young woman of great poise and beauty. She even did some modeling in Junior High.

She loved dogs and horses. She had dogs as pets most of her life: Junior, Khaki, Pepper, Lily and Nikko, to name a few!

Noreen’s stepfather was in the military and so the family moved a great deal. When Noreen’s stepfather was stationed in Hawaii, Noreen met her future husband, Ted. Theodore Marvin (Ted) saw a picture of Noreen on her stepfather’s desk and it was love at first sight. Three months later, they were married.

Ted and Noreen lived in Japan twice shortly after World War 2. Noreen’s beautiful blond hair attracted a lot of attention. Noreen’s passion for all things oriental began in Japan as she explored the countryside and collected antiques.

When Ted and Noreen returned to the states, their daughter, Lani, was born at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Their son, Richard, was born at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Their son, David, was born at Fort McPherson, Georgia. When ted retired, Ted’s company transferred him to the Chicago area. Their son, Robert, was born in Niles, Illinois.

Noreen enjoyed raising her family. She was a thoughtful, compassionate and loving wife and mother. She also enjoyed her passions for gardening, flower arranging, decorating and antiques, making her home and yard beautiful.

When Noreen’s beloved Ted passed away, the courageous and very competent Noreen sold the family home and moved to Providence Point in Issaquah, Washington. Noreen loved being surrounded by many of her family, and by the beauty of the great Northwest. She felt like she had returned home.

Noreen did not recover after a stroke in December, 2011. Noreen Jewell Eckaus passed away on March 29, 2012.

Noreen will be buried at Tahoma National Cemetery with her husband’s ashes with her. She asked that her headstone say “Together at last.”
